Awarded Nationalities Hero Prize by the United Nationalities Alliance of Burma/Myanmar, Prisoner of Conscience by the Amnesty International, the leader of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy Khun Htun Oo, was sentenced for a total of 93 years of imprisonment by the military junta for standing up for the rigths of the ethnic people and the democratic union.
Khun Htun Oo devoted his life for the pursuit of a multi-party democratic system, for federalism, and for equality in his country. He is a well-loved and respected leader among different ethnicities and one the most important national political figures in Burma/Myanmar.
The Network of Social Democracy in Asia (Socdem Asia) expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved family of Khun Htun Oo, our comrades in the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, and the democratic movement in Burma/Myanmar. May Khun Htun Oo's life and work continue to fuel the fire for democracy in Shan and in the whole country. May his memory continue to inspire our joint vision for a just, democratic, and inclusive order as he would have continued his work especially now that the country is once again under the military rule.
